Preschool at Riley

Little Racers Early Learning Center

We have a play-based program here at Riley. Our goal is to help your child develop emotionally, socially, intellectually and physically.  Our program is designed to enable your child to explore, problem solve, create, discover, and interact in a positive learning environment.

It is the philosophy of the VCSC that early childhood should be a time of fun, warmth, security, exploring, and discovery.  Preschool children are creative and receptive; the program strives to nurture and encourage these qualities in its students in an atmosphere that encourages play based learning.

Enrollment first shall be open to any age eligible child of a Vigo County School Corporation employee, provided the Early Learning Center can meet the needs of the child and an opening is available.

Any remaining openings will be made available to any child of the community.  A waiting list will be maintained.

Enrollment in the Early Learning Center shall be provided without discrimination (sex, race, creed, and political belief).  It is our hope that a balanced enrollment can be maintained so that various ages, racial, sexual and socio-economic family groups can be represented.

Children who will be (4) years of age on or before August 1 of the year they are enrolled will be placed in the 4 year old class. Children who will be (3) years of age on or before August 1 will be placed in the 3 year old class.

The preschool is a 9-month program for the academic year following the Vigo County School Corporation calendar.  This plan allows for all breaks coinciding with the school’s calendar; however, it does not allow for any additional vacation time.

This program provides a morning and an afternoon session. The children have fun and learn at the same time!  We work on cognitive skills, fine and gross motor skills, social skills, personal care skills and communication skills. While it may look like the children are playing, they are learning valuable lifelong skills that will help them learn throughout school!

The following curriculums guide our learning activities:

·        Little Treasures, Language Arts

·        Everyday Math for preschoolers

·        Second Step Social Curriculum

·        Handwriting Without Tears

·        The STAR Program for students with Autism

To find out more about this program, or to schedule your child for a developmental screening, please contact Sarah Reuter, preschool director at 812-462-4364, ext. 203.
